“The Disco King of Bollywood” comes to LA for a public lecture and a rare performance and an afterparty with Discostan with guests Maieli and MTooray! n a composing career that has stretched over five decades, hundreds of films and thousands of songs, Bappi Lahiri has established himself as an unparalleled force in the world of Bollywood and beyond. The Bengali-born singer is regarded as the first artist to introduce disco to Indian cinema, a stylistic shift that had a seismic impact on the genre’s vibrant musical personality for years to come. The “Disco King of Bollywood” will sit for an in-depth public lecture that charts his career’s enormous influence and, later in the evening, perform a few of his unforgettable hits in front of a live audience. Moderated by DJ Rekha.

Come celebrate the diversity of stories that make Southern California such a place of discovery. At the 12th-annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar, presented by L.A. as Subject and the USC Libraries, anyone with an interest in the region’s history will find something of value. A broad array of institutions and archives will have experts on hand to show off their collections and answer questions—from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Los Angeles Public Library to private collectors whose materials fill the gaps left in the region’s history. In addition to the wealth of information on display from exhibitors, day-long programming will feature preservation workshops and enlightening presenatations. The USC Libraries serve as the host institution for L.A. as Subject, an alliance of libraries, museums, and other archival and cultural organizations.

2017 Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation

The festival features two programs of short films, including classic and contemporary works. Blending an appreciation of classical animation with the sensibilities of avant-garde cinema and the visual culture of alternative comics, the short films in this year’s programs feature historical CG works, animated essay films, unconventional stop-motion, and experimental collage methods. Following the two programs of short films will be a screening and conversation with festival guest Jacolby Satterwhite. Satterwhite’s work uses performance and 3D animation to engages issues of technology, fantasy, the body, queer culture, the archive, and his own personal and family history.

Video Art Workshop with Alima Jennings

Workshop participants will collaborate with each other to create video art using analog video mixers, processors, title makers & cameras. As a group we will review examples of video art from various artists and then go on to explore techniques and use of technology to create our own pieces. If participants choose to do so, they may do their own field recording with a VHS camera during the workshop. We will explore the use and manipulation of found footage, video feedback, colorization, analog video drawing and titlemaking. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own footage or any found footage as well as pieces of analog video editing equipment you would like to use & explore. SASSAS presents the premiere Los Angeles performance of Japanese sound pioneer Akio Suzuki at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook on Sunday, October 22. Joining Akio is New York based interdisciplinary artist Aki Onda. Suzuki is known as a pioneer of sound art, but the breadth of his activities and the form of his works far exceeds the normal boundaries of this genre. Onda is a composer, performer, visual artist, and curator. Onda was born in Japan and currently resides in New York. He is particularly known for his “Cassette Memories” — works compiled from a “sound diary” of field-recordings collected by using the cassette Walkman over a span of last quarter-century. He creates compositions, performances, and visual artworks from those sound memories.

Like a lot of minimalist art, Sarah Davachi’s music appears simple on the surface....Her music consists mainly of long held tones. The real action is not found in the notes themselves but in their microtonal variations and the wealth of overtones, harmonics, and ghostly pulses produced by the friction between them. Her work belongs to a tradition of deep, shimmering drone music that... is also profoundly expressive. Her filters sweep back and forth in slow, deliberate, and often unpredictable movements that suggest the careful thought process that drives the hand behind them.
