Please join us for this very special visit by Sun Ra Arkestra bandleader Marshall Allen, with Elliott Levin (winds), Gabe Noel (bass) & Ryan Sawyer (drums), and more TBA! Marshall Allen (born May 25, 1924 in Louisville, Kentucky), alto saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist (flute, clarinet, oboe, kora, and Electronic Valve Instrument), composer, bandleader, and arranger. Best known for his long association with Sun Ra, lasting from the late 1950s until Ra's death, after which Allen has continued to lead the Sun Ra Arkestra.

Join us on the first Friday of 2018 for a night of eye and ear bending audiovisuals. Special guests Eric Barry Drasin and Scorpion Mouse from New York will be doing realtime media and live coding performances and Spencer Salazar will perform with his Auraglyph sketchpad / modular synth application. Perpetual Dawn resident Alex Pelly will bring her unique flavor of analog video accompanied by a Kid606 live score. PD resident Eric Parren will show a flicker-heavy live cinema set.

HANNAH EPSTEIN: MONSTER WORLD

Steve Turner is pleased to present Monster World, a solo exhibition by Toronto-based Hannah Epstein that consists of a selection of brightly colored hooked rugs that depict a variety of monsters as imagined by the artist, whether derived from her study of folklore, her visual backlog of TV images, or from her interest in internet memes. A few years later Epstein learned how to make hooked rugs which has enabled her to use a traditional craft medium to become a folklorist in the Internet age. Epstein’s monsters, whether crazy cats, spooky hybrid animals, or a wild-eyed, shaved-headed Brittney Spears, remind us that monsters have long been lurking in the corners of our imagination.

Closing: Omolara Abode – Chapter 7 Dankruptcy

Born in Lagos, raised in California, Omolara Abode has always been interested in visual storytelling, utilizing video as her medium. After a childhood spent experimenting with consumer-grade equipment, Omo (b. 1988, Lagos, Nigeria) expanded her technical expertise at UCLA's School of Theater, Film & Television. Following many years of working in various aspects of the film & TV industry, she attended a projection mapping workshop hosted by United VJs over a weekend at Art Share LA. This commenced a new avenue of creative endeavors, with an ever-growing roster of art galleries, music showcases, and theatrical productions that have featured her video installation and performance, under the stage moniker VIDEOMO. "Chapter 7 Dankruptcy" is the first solo exhibition curated by VIDEOMO. This show will utilize projectors, LED lights, video monitors and even a bioluminescence tank, in order to build out a fully immersive environment of art to view "during a dry spell."

Jean Day is a poet, union activist, and editor whose Daydream is just out from Litmus Press. Recent poems can also be seen in Chicago Review, The Delineator, Across the Margin, Open House, Breather, and Jongler (French)--as well as in her Triumph of Life, soon to appear from Insurance Editions. Earlier works include Early Bird (O’Clock, 2014) and Enthusiasm (Adventures in Poetry, 2006), among other books, and her work has also appeared in many anthologies. Johanna Drucker is an artist, writer, and scholar who holds the Breslauer Professor chair at UCLA in the Department of Information Studies. She published her first book of creative prose, Dark, in 1972 and in addition to her more than three-dozen artist’s books, widely held in library, museum, and private collections, she has published more than a dozen works of creative fiction. She has two books forthcoming in 2018, Downdrift: An Eco-fiction (Three Rooms Press) and The General Theory of Social Relativity (The Elephants), from which she will read. Mashinka Firunts is an artist, writer, and PhD candidate in the University of Pennsylvania’s History of Art department. She is a founding member of the performance group Research Service with Avi Alpert and Danny Snelson, with whom she has performed at the Palais de Tokyo, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, and the Drawing Center New York. She is the co-editor of Present Tense Pamphlets, a publishing platform for score-based performance.

Liquid Love brings together works that consider expressions of love, desire, and affection when these basic human needs are highly mediated and manipulated for profit by technological platforms. The show takes its title from sociologist Zygmunt Bauman’s 2003 book, where he argues that the logic of the capitalist market has thoroughly infiltrated the modern individual’s approach to relationships, as realized in everything from counseling fads to online dating. Citing widespread detachment and isolation, Bauman warns against the corrosive influence of consumerism on human bonds at all levels. By presenting a complicated picture of contemporary human connection, Liquid Love reflects on our ability to connect, romantically or otherwise, under neoliberal capitalism through and within our tools.

The Scraper of the Sky was a colossal being that brought an end to the Second Age of Atoll. A powerful wizard has found a way to awaken the sleeping monstrosity. Tyco Springrocket, a brilliant gnome inventor, has created a device that fuses magic with science which could possibly defeat the giant. Now if only they can acquire a power source...Dungeon Master is the interactive, fantasy-adventure stage show starring YOU! Six audience volunteers will be called forth to go upon a quest. They will overcome dangerous obstacles, cast spells, solve riddles, and fight horrific monsters, all for YOUR entertainment.

Sewing Circle in the Tea Room!

This January, the Rhinoceros Project travels to Los Angeles to host a sewing circle in the Tea Room of the Museum of Jurassic Technology! As some of the first contemporary artists to offer a social practice intervention there, we invite all to join us in sewing and celebrating the new year! This event is free, but RSVPs are required to enter, as this is a day in which the museum is not typically open. To RSVP, send a message with the time you will be there to the Rhinoceros Project's page. The museum will be open to our visitors during our event.
